Editor’s Comment: I’ve been getting into more historical fiction lately and this one is outstanding, especially if you know as little about Korea and its history as I did. For centuries, its location directly between powerful China and Japan has created much conflict for this peninsula nation. Ms. Buck weaves a brilliant background using two generations of the same family and their transition from advisors to Korean royalty to secret opposition to the Japanese occupation. I’m usually reading either non-fiction/business or “brain candy mysteries”; The Living Reed is a nice middle ground. I learned and was entertained at the same time.
