September Book

The Book of the Month:
A Simple Path
Written by Mother Theresa

Preface:
I first read this when it came out in 1995 and just skimmed it again. The most amazing thing about this woman who so changed our world is that her message is indeed so simple. Maybe that in itself is her lesson to we who care about carrying on her mission now long after she's gone. Most interesting to me is that, as with all those I admire in service, Mother Theresa believed that the end game was her own peace of mind. That is, in my view, pursuing a noble cause is also the path to the most fulfilling life.

A favorite quote:
"The fruit of silence is prayer; the fruit of prayer is faith; the fruit of faith is love; the fruit of love is service; the fruit of service is peace."

For First Time Readers

Books are food for my brain and my heart. My Mom was a voracious reader. Despite raising ten children, she always found time to read great books and she passed on that love to all of us.
Now, at 55, I realize that what form may have come to my life from books.
Dumbo the Flying Elephant, a book my Mom probably read to me, I suppose taught me that there were mean people in the world but there's also nothing we can't do if we try, even if we fail.

Later, Richie Rich comic books taught me you can have money and be a good person.

Later still in adolescence, To Kill A Mockingbird tore my heart out with the reality of racism - compassion was maybe my lesson and 1984 taught me to trust not the conventional world.

And since then, no year has passed that I haven't read at least one book that moved my life in some significant direction. And so I will share thoughts on the books I've read that affected me and point you to them for a full read, hoping that you remember that these are very personal - some you may love, others you'll wonder what the hell I saw in them!
