our story

The term "capacity building" refers to both a technique and an outcome of the assistance that is provided to not for profit organizations in search of ways to become self-sustaining and self-reliant. Using "best business practices" to assist charitable causes in their missions to become and remain viable and productive business models, corporate individuals who are experts in a particular field work with non-profit management to help them learn to be more businesslike in their overall approach to the operations of their non-profit organization. This regimen instills good business acumen and helps the non-profit organization provide the BEST quality charitable mission given its knowledge and improved ability to use its resources.

. Bridge Street Project

An historic street in my hometown of Ashtabula, Ohio, seemed a good place to pilot a social business incubator. In late 2008, with the help of the WECO Fund, Inc., and Andover Bank, we sought
"people with a good idea for a business but no money." By early summer of 2009, we had supported the opening of 4 new retail businesses on this street. With some success in both these enterprises and our process, we hope to move this project to other challenged neighborhoods in Northeast Ohio by early 2011. Please click here - Bridge Street Project - for more infomation on how to apply.

. The Business of Good Forum

With our good friends at the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University, the foundation conducts a semi-monthly forum. The concept is simple - we invite someone with success serving others to dialogue with the audience. For speakers and schedules, see our Forum chocolate. For reports of past speakers, go to the Your Newsletter chocolate and follow those dates.

. Social Business Center

This concept is in formation. Originally, we thought we would become a part of the
"Non-Profit Center Network", a wonderful coalition of shared spaces for non-profits. After studying, we realized that we would be more helpful to the non-profits in Northeast Ohio by developing a "virtual" business service center. By mid-2010, we plan to launch a web-based center that will provide shared business services, from software to strategic planning, for organizations who serve the very poor.
