Mission Statement
The Business of Good is a charitable foundation, dedicated to assisting nonprofit organizations in expanding their capacity to meet the personal, economic, social, and self-esteem needs of the very poor.
History
Tim and Alice McCarthy began the foundation in 1998 , under the name Free Hand, Inc. Tim's mother, Margaret, used to say, "If you don't give with a free hand, you shouldn't bother giving at all." This quote sets the structure for the foundation - to give without expecting anything in return.
The foundation's focus it to provide support for already existing initiatives rather than to create new ones, particularly in the area of self-esteem building, the lack of which is the source of most of our world's problems.
Focusing on nonprofits that serve the very poor, the foundation helps teach people and organizations how to fish rather than to provide just the fish. This focus is an important consideration in the foundation's giving.
In March 2009, the foundation changed its name from Free Hand, Inc. to The Business of Good Foundation. This transformation enabled the Foundation to link all its initiatives together under one unified title.
With a new name and a clear mission statement, the next chapter in The Business of Good Foundation is well underway.
